A debit card looks just like a credit
card but works very differently. When purchases are made
by using a credit card the amount of the purchase is charged
to the credit card account to be paid at a later date, including
interest. But when a debit card is used to make purchases
the funds are instantly withdrawn from the cardholder’s
bank account. So just like with an ATM card or a check card,
if there are not sufficient funds in the bank account the
purchase will be declined.
There are many advantages to using a debit card. They are
accepted nearly everywhere that cash is accepted which decreases
the need to carry an abundance of cash in your wallet. Another
great convenience feature is that they are accepted almost
everywhere that major credit cards are accepted. They can
also be used to purchase items that not too long ago were
only purchasable by credit cards, such as airline tickets
or mail orders.
In more ways than one a debit card can serve as a budgeting
tool. Many people have almost completely replaced using cash
with using their debit card for even the smallest of purchases.
This will allow the consumer to easily see where they are
spending every dollar. By being able to track all of your
expenses it is easy to see the areas that you may be overspending
and need to cut back. As mentioned earlier, if there are not
enough funds in the bank account then an attempted transaction
will be declined. This will help consumers from buying items
out of impulse that they do not truly have the have the money
for at that time.
